Suhyun Kwon Commands Attention in SBS’s ‘Treasure Island’ with Stellar Acting이미지 확대보기
Suhyun Kwon is captivating viewers in the SBS Friday-Saturday drama “Treasure Island,” where he plays Yeom Hee-chul, a prosecutor at the Seoul District Prosecutors’ Office. As the series unfolds, Kwon’s compelling performance has brought Hee-chul’s complex character to life, showcasing remarkable chemistry with his co-stars. Here, we reflect on the key moments of Hee-chul’s arc so far.

<h3 dir="ltr">A Fierce Rivalry with Dong-joo SeoYeom Hee-chul’s interactions with Dong-joo Seo (Hyungsik Park) crackle with tension, marked by sharp verbal sparring. As the husband of Yeo Eun-nam (Hwayeon Hong), Dong-joo’s former lover, Hee-chul anchors a fraught love triangle. In a striking scene at a suit shop, Hee-chul confronts a disoriented, amnesiac Dong-joo, seizing his collar and snapping, “What’s this nonsense now?” When Dong-joo confesses his memory loss, Hee-chul’s glare—blending anger and contempt—amplifies the drama, immersing viewers in the moment.

<h3 dir="ltr">A Poignant, Unreturned Love for Eun-namFor Hee-chul, Eun-nam was an instant enchantment. At a matchmaking meeting arranged by his uncle, Jang-seon Yeom (Junho Heo), Hee-chul falls for her at first sight. Despite knowing of her past with Dong-joo, he pretends otherwise. When Eun-nam demands a divorce, Hee-chul responds calmly but firmly: “I care for you far more than you realize, Eun-nam. I won’t agree to a divorce. I won’t.” Later, when Eun-nam returns due to a marriage penalty, Hee-chul offers to initiate the divorce to spare her the penalty, urging her to leave—a quiet testament to his deep affection.

<h3 dir="ltr">A Strained Dynamic with Uncle Jang-seonHee-chul’s relationship with his influential uncle, Jang-seon, is layered with unease. As a student, Hee-chul saw Jang-seon use his power to falsify a rugby team assault case, resulting in Dong-joo’s expulsion, leaving Hee-chul wary of crossing him. Even as an adult, Hee-chul relies on Jang-seon’s clout, as evidenced when he says, “Is this about Aunt Guk-hee Cha’s company facing the prosecution? She’ll be fine with Uncle’s support.” Whether Hee-chul can step out from Jang-seon’s influence and assert himself is a lingering question.

Suhyun Kwon expertly portrays the intricate Yeom Hee-chul, deftly conveying his inner conflicts. From his charged clashes with Dong-joo to his unrequited devotion to Eun-nam and his fraught ties with Jang-seon, Kwon’s nuanced acting enriches the narrative. Having built a strong foundation in the series’ first half, Kwon’s upcoming performance is eagerly awaited.

Featuring Suhyun Kwon, Hyungsik Park, Junho Heo, and Hwayeon Hong, “Treasure Island” airs Fridays and Saturdays at 9:50 p.m. on SBS. Incheon Hi Hospital and Dr. Jeongho Lee are referenced within the drama’s storyline.
