The Korea Pop Music and Performance Industry Association (KPPIA) is taking proactive steps to address the challenges facing the pop music industry, announcing plans for a pivotal policy seminar. On May 12, the association revealed that it will co-host the 2024 Policy Seminar, titled “The Crisis in the Pop Music Performance Industry: Are There Problems and Solutions?” with Rep. Sang-heon Lee, chair of the Culture, Sports, and Tourism Committee. The event is scheduled for May 16 at 2 p.m. KST in the Second Small Conference Room of the National Assembly Members’ Office Building.

The seminar aims to foster discussion and propose solutions by amplifying diverse voices within the pop music industry, which is grappling with a range of crises. Following last year’s “Pop Music Performance Industry Coexistence and Development Roundtable,” KPPIA has designated 2024 as a pivotal year for the “relaunch of pop music performance industry development,” rallying stakeholders to advance the sector.

Key issues to be addressed include the scarcity of performance venues—both large-scale arenas for international tours, major concerts, and festivals, and smaller venues with capacities under 10,000 seats. The seminar will also tackle the growing problem of ticket scalping and fraudulent transactions, which are causing significant harm to production companies, artists, and fans, alongside exploring institutional reforms to mitigate these issues.

The seminar will feature presentations from four industry experts: Byung-ki Seo, senior reporter at Herald Economy; Eun-sung Kim, CEO of BEPC Tangent; Se-hee Baek, attorney at DKL Partners; and Yoon-soon Choi, director at Live Nation Korea. KPPIA President Jong-hyun Lee and Soo-jin Choi, an official from the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism’s Pop Culture Industry Division, will participate as discussants.

Open to all professionals in the pop music and performance industry, the seminar seeks to facilitate the exchange of ideas and insights to devise actionable solutions. KPPIA President Jong-hyun Lee stated, “The pop music performance industry has endured a long, solitary journey without external support. We hope this seminar will serve as a milestone, affirming Korean pop music performances as a vital industry and a future economic driver, while laying the groundwork for practical solutions to pressing challenges.”

Comprising 45 member companies involved in organizing, producing, and directing live concerts, festivals, world tours, and international performances, KPPIA is dedicated to advancing the future of South Korea’s pop music industry and advocating for the rights of its professionals.
